Goal vs. limit

I’m in the midst of growing my coaching and consulting business again after a several month hiatus.

It’s been fun to step up my activity and bring in some new clients now that I can fully focus on it.

It has suddenly become important to set a target number of clients. This is not a goal. I’m not striving intensely to get to that number.

The need for speed

This week, for the first time since the start of the year, things slowed down a little.

When I say that things slowed down, I mean that there is less to do. I am working eight- or nine-hour days instead of thirteen-hour ones.

And that means that I can slow down, too. I don't have to be frantic. I don't have to watch the clock carefully to make sure I can fit all my tasks and meetings in. There is enough time for everything.

It only has to work for you

I have recently become reacquainted with the drama of booking a flight.

It is a fraught decision-making experience. Not only must you navigate existential issues like, “Am I even going to be the same person seven weeks from now? What if I’m not alive? What if I don’t want to go on this trip?”, you also have to deal with logistical ones, plus shifting and unpredictable prices that create a sense of urgency and FOMO. As much as I love travel, I do not love this process.

The cost of urgency

I’m building a new business, and I’m finding it hard to shake the feeling that I need to be moving faster.

In the past, when I’ve created a new offering, it was often accompanied by the desire for a quick return on investment. I wanted to launch a thing because I needed some money coming in.

But now, despite COVID, things are more stable. I’m creating something new because I want to, not because I’m desperate and digging myself out of a hole. And that means I can take my time. However, I still feel that underlying sense of urgency. And this urgency carries a cost.
